A third party liability insurance may not offer the total protection that a comprehensive automobile insurance offers, but third party liability insurance, which is considered one of the more common types of basic automobile insurance is still a useful insurance type for car owners.

A third party liability insurance will still offer you protection from solely incurring the financial cost if you happen to meet an accident on the road. At the very least you won’t have to worry about the repair cost for the other car or vehicle in the accident. The savings is still quite significant so if you have an old car consider getting a third party liability insurance instead.

When reading through an auto insurance policy, it can seem almost impossible to understand. This is because there are various words that we do not use in our everyday language. Actually, those words are not really used outside of the insurance industry or outside of a conversation involving insurance. If you don’t have an understanding of those words, then it can seem as if someone is speaking a foreign language to you. That is why you should learn some of the insurance jargon that is thrown around because insurance happens to be a large part of your life.

Without insurance, you do not have any type of protection in case you are in a car accident. If you don’t have protection, then you can be sued. Being sued means you’ll have to pay for any damages sustained in an accident if the accident was your fault. Even if the accident wasn’t your fault, you still have to worry about your medical bills, replacing your car and the medical expenses of anyone in the car with you. This in itself makes it obvious why auto insurance is a necessity. Luckily, states mandate that people must have a minimum amount of auto insurance.

Basic terms

There are really only five basic terms that you need to know when talking about car insurance. Those terms are:

- Liability coverage
- Physical damage coverage
- Medical coverage
- Emergency assistance coverage
- Unattached equipment coverage

A few of these may look a bit familiar to you, but there are a couple of them may not. We frequently hear the terms liability coverage, physical damage coverage, and medical coverage when talking about car insurance and reading our policies. What we don’t hear much of is emergency assistance coverage and unattached equipment coverage. These are, of course, not as important as the other aspects of your coverage, but that does not mean that they should be ignored since they are great add-ons to your policy.

The most common of the terms you will hear is liability coverage. Liability coverage is the part of your policy that covers damages caused by you in the case of an accident. You should always make sure this coverage is enough to cover damages. If not, then you may have to pay an out of pocket expense to the person who was the victim in the crash. Medical coverage covers you and any passengers within your vehicle as a result of a crash. Physical damage coverage will help you repair or replace your vehicle.

As for the two terms that are a bit different, emergency assistance coverage is like a type of roadside assistance. Adding this to your plan provides you with tow service so that you’re not stranded on a highway in unfamiliar territory. Lastly, unattached equipment coverage provides coverage for that equipment that is not a permanent attachment to your car. That may include something such as a satellite radio system. If you have expensive attachments on your car, you want to make sure that you insure those as well so that you don’t have to pay for their replacement or can have those items repaired by your insurance.

Having an understanding

Knowing these terms is the first step in understanding some of the confusing but important terms that you will see and hear. If you don’t understand them, you cannot understand what type of home and car insurance coverage you have or even how it works. Knowing how it works helps you determine if what you have is adequate enough for your particular needs.

Michigan has one of the most extensive, comprehensive and complex No-Fault Car Insurance systems in North America. Every owner of a car in Michigan must buy certain basic car insurance coverages just to get license plates. It is illegal to drive or even to let your car be driven without no-fault insurance coverage.

The purpose of no-fault car insurance is to ensure that every person injured in a car accident is entitled to recover basic medical expense coverage and certain lost wages. Basic no-fault coverage in Michigan does not cover damage to vehicles. As this article is intended to provide basic information to injured people it will not deal with car damage issues and coverage.

A basic Michigan No Fault insurance policy includes three main parts. First, it must provide personal injury protection. If you suffer personal injuries in a car accident in Michigan your own insurance policy is required to pay all of the resulting medical costs, regardless of who is to blame for the car accident. This protection also pays up to 85% or the income you would have earned, had you not suffered personal injuries, for up to three years. There is a limit on the monthly wage loss recovery under this coverage that is revised annually.

In 2007 the maximum was $4,713.00 per month. If you are killed in a car accident your family may be entitled to receive up to that amount, again, for a maximum of three years. In addition to the medical and wage expenses, a person who suffers personal injuries in a car accident can also be entitled to receive up to $20.00 per day for replacement services that the injured person cannot perform such as housekeeping, lawn and garden car and other such services.

The second main area of coverage under the basic Michigan no fault scheme protects you from being responsible for damaging other people’s property up to $1,000,000.00. If you are at fault for the accident and the accident causes damage to another person’s building, fencing, or properly parked car, for example, your insurance policy covers damage up to that amount.

The third area of this no fault scheme is intended to protect the insured person from being sued as a result of car accidents except in specified circumstances. Some of the exceptions that allow someone who has suffered personal injuries to sue an insured driver or car owner in Michigan include car accidents in which a person is killed, suffers a serious injury or suffers permanent disfigurement. There are also exceptions with the right to sue dealing with car accidents that happen in Michigan involving non-resident’s that are occupants in cars not registered in Michigan; car accidents that occur in another state; and for up to $500.00 if there is not more than 50% fault for an accident that causes damages to another’s car and which damages are not covered by insurance.

The minimum insurance limits in Michigan ensures a minimum coverage of $20,000.00 if someone is hurt or killed in an accident; up to $40,000.00 total for the accident if more than one person is hurt or killed; and up to $10,000.00 for property damage in another state. These limits are often referred to as the 20/40/10. It is important to understand that these are the minimum limits. Car owners may purchase, and some might recommend, the purchase higher limits.

The No Fault insurance policy in Michigan covers all family members living within the same house. Personal injury protection benefits will be paid even when a family member is a passenger in another person’s car or if they are a pedestrian and suffer personal injuries when struck by a car. The no fault coverage in Michigan also covers your passengers or pedestrians that are injured in an accident involving your car if they do not have any no-fault coverage of their own.

This brief overview should make it clear that the Michigan No-Fault legislative scheme is extremely complex. If you or a family member has suffered personal injuries in a car accident in Michigan you should speak with a Michigan lawyer that specializes in car accident law suits. The Injury Alliance can help you find a qualified and experienced personal injury lawyer in Michigan. Such a lawyer will provide you with a free consultation either over the telephone or in person. If you do not use the service of the Injury Alliance we still strongly recommend that you contact a Michigan personal injury lawyer immediately. Many will also provide a basic consultation free of charge.

This article is not a comprehensive or complete summary of the Michigan car insurance legislative scheme. Michigan has one of the most comprehensive and complex no fault insurance schemes in North America. A complete summary of that scheme could confuse many lawyers. This article, therefore, is a very brief summary of some important points of the system that we believe might help someone that has been injured in an accident in Michigan with an overview. For every rule there are exceptions. Every individual has unique circumstances that can be applied differently to the legislative system. Such being the case this article is not meant as legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the contents as of the time of writing, changes can and do occur in the legal field every day. If you have been injured in an accident we strongly recommend that you speak with a Michigan lawyer that specializes in car accident personal injury .

There is a great deal of overlap between RV and auto policies. If you have a motorized RV, you will need some of the same coverage’s provided by an auto policy plus specialized RV coverage’s. I will attempt to explain a few things to consider without confusing you.

Regardless of the insurance company you decide to use, there are a handful of basic coverage’s you will need to have in your policy. Again, this coverage is very similar, if not identical, to the coverage you have on your personal auto insurance policy. This coverage can be broken down into two different categories; liability and physical damage. All motorized RV’s will have some form of liability coverage. Towable RV’s like travel trailers and 5th wheel trailers do not have any liability coverage. However, if you own a travel trailer or 5th wheel the section on liability may contain information helpful to you regarding the vehicle you use to tow your trailer.

There are many things to consider, here are just a few:

Liability Coverage

There are a number of coverage’s that fall under the category of liability coverage including Bodily Injury, Property Damage, Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury, Underinsured Motorist, Uninsured Motorist Property Damage, Personal Injury Protection and Medical Payments. Some of these coverage’s vary by state.

Note: The Department of Insurance in the state you live in can be an excellent resource for additional information regarding state specific coverage’s. Most states offer a Consumer Buyer’s Guide on their website that will explain state specific nuances to each of these coverage’s.

Bodily Injury is third party coverage. This means it provides protection for claims due to injuries to a passenger in your vehicle (other than you or a family member) or passengers in another vehicle, or pedestrians. It provides you, the owner/operator of a motor vehicle, with protection for your legal liability due to the ownership, maintenance or use of your RV. It is very important to select a limit that is high enough to protect your assets. You may be responsible for any amounts, related to injuries received to the third party, over and above the limit on your insurance policy. You can also purchase a separate umbrella policy that sits over all of your liability limits on your cars, your house and your motorized RV.

Property Damage is also a third party coverage, and provides protection for claims due to damage to other people’s property. For example, Property Damage would pay to repair damage to the bumper of a car that you rear-end in an accident. Bodily Injury and Property Damage limits typically work together and can be either a split limit or a combined single limit. A typical split limit has a different limit for damages to each person, each accident and property damage. For example, a common split limit would be $100,000/$300,000/$50,000. This means that for Bodily Injury coverage you have a maximum limit of $100,000 per person for each person injured not to exceed $300,000 per accident and a $50,000 limit for Property Damage. A common single limit for Bodily Injury and Property Damage is $300,000 meaning you have $300,000 to pay for all injuries and property damage arising from any one accident. It can be split any which way between injured parties and damaged property. Bodily Injury and Property Damage are required for all motorized RV’s. For travel trailers and 5th wheel trailers liability follows the unit towing the trailer, so Bodily Injury and Property Damage coverage’s are not necessary.

Uninsured Motorists (UM) and Underinsured Motorists (UIM) coverage’s can be first or third party coverage’s. UM provides protection for injuries you or someone else sustains in an accident due to the fault of another party when the at-fault party does not have any insurance. UIM provides protection for injuries you or someone else sustain in an accident due to the fault of another party when the at-fault party does have insurance, but not enough insurance to cover your damages. UM and UIM are sold on a split limit and combined single limit basis, just like Bodily Injury and Property Damage.

Your RV insurance can and should fit your RV. To get a free RV insurance quote with absolutely no obligation, I recommend Explorer RV Insurance Agency, Inc. you can call 1-888-774-6778.
Happy Camping,

Copyright 2006 by Mark J.

Coming up with the necessary amount when car accidents happen is a burden when you don’t have any auto insurance at all. Very often, in car collisions, the cost of repairs could be more than the annual premium. If you don’t have enough cash stashed away, or are not liquid enough, this could cause serious financial problems. The basic auto insurance should sufficiently cover third party insurance that includes bodily injury and property damage.

In choosing the right auto insurance, the following will be the basic considerations:

The reputation of the insurance company Premium rates and discounts should be competitive with other similarly reputable insurance companies Flexible limits and deductibles that would not dislocate financial standing. Limits are the maximum amount for a particular loss or damage. Beyond that, the assured is liable. Comprehensive coverage that could cover practically damages, loses, medical treatment and other liabilities that could stem from an accident Have an exact sample or copy of the policy to be issued to carefully study, analyze and understand the fine print of the terms, conditions, stipulations and clauses.

Policies, rates, terms and conditions can vary from one state to another. The most practical and time saving way to compare auto insurance is online – the internet. Comparative charts for top insurance companies per state could be available. This does away with agents or brokers calling for appointments. For those not familiar with auto insurance, it would help to talk to someone knowledgeable about it. Understanding how auto insurance works will be an advantage. It would also be wise to talk to some family or friends who have experienced getting insurance for their vehicles. They should be able to provide information on how convenient services were made available to them.

Terms of payment are another consideration for auto insurance. Insurance expense has not been considered yet a priority compared to basic necessities. Although it is common knowledge that paying upfront in full will afford a considerable discount more often. Taking recession into account, there should be some premium payment plan the companies could offer while putting the insurance policy in effect immediately.

When the time comes to get that auto insurance, it is best to quote the fair market value of your car. Insurance companies will not pay for a higher value that was covered; instead they base it on the prevailing fair market value of other cars of the same condition, make and model. Another important concern is to inquire if there is any depreciation deducted should the car be stolen or totally wrecked a couple of months before the policy expires. That is one matter that could be discussed with the insurance company when it comes to the cars’ fair market value upon insuring. There could be some companies that might use this trick to save on claims.

Lastly, it is important, likewise, to know what requirements the insurance company will need when filing for a claim. The process flow and the average time period to get the claim settled.

An uninsured auto accident can put in a very bad spot, even if you are not the person who caused the accident! If you are in California, the “don’t pay don’t play” law is in effect. If you do not carry liability
insurance, you cannot make a claim against the person that hit you. This includes bodily injury and property damage claims! You will be left at your own devices.

If you are not in California, then let me the first one to tell you: stop driving without insurance, go and get yourself a policy, please! You are increasing everyone’s premiums. However, this does not mean that insurance companies get a free pass. You need to learn how to protect yourself. You made a huge mistake, no question. Nevertheless, you need to learn how to protect yourself so you are not treated unfairly.

Insurance companies do not like people who do not have insurance (neither do judges, juries, lawyers, medical providers, nor the public in general). The insurance carrier will try to deny your claim and blame you for the accident. They will put “fault” on you! If the accident is clear (you were rear ended), then the insurance company will be more reasonable; however, if the persons that hit you denies or implies that they did not caused the accident, but you did. Then the insurance company has a duty (not optional) to believe their own client and send you a denial letter. Insurance companies are bound to believe their clients, so if the other driver does not admit fault, it will be up to you to fight back. Since you do not have insurance, you will have to learn the claim process and negotiate as if you were your own insurance adjuster. You need to be ready to settle your uninsured auto accident.

Remember that not having insurance does not mean you caused the accident. You need to separate the two issues and document your claim showing that you had no responsibility in the accident. The first step is to get a copy of the police report. You can go to the Police Records Office and request one. Some jurisdictions will give you a copy the same day. Some others will take up to two weeks. Once you get the police report, make sure you read it thoroughly. Make sure you ask the police records office for an overlay sheet or visit:http://www.auto-insurance-claim-advice.com/overlay-sheet.html to download one from your state.

You need to be looking at what contributory circumstances were attributed to you and the other driver. If there are no codes, or statements made by the officer citing you at fault, then you can point that out to the insurance company.

Read the police report and try to identify witnesses. You can contact them and see if they will be willing to give a statement. Many witnesses will help you if you were truly not at fault. Also look at the physical damages left on both vehicles. Is it even possible that the accident happened how the insurance company claims it did?

Write a letter to the insurance company and explain your position. How did the accident happen and what is your evidence. Give them a date line. If they do not answer, then proceed to file a small claims court
lawsuit. Most of the time, insurance companies will try to settle before you go to court. If they don’t want to settle, go in front of a judge and explain why you were not at fault. If your case is clear, then the insurance company must pay the judgment.

This is a difficult way to deal with your uninsured auto accident; it would be a lot easier if you had insurance in the first place. If you believe you are being “snowed” by the insurance company, consult with an attorney.

With the Financial crisis that looms over us and many consumers having difficult financial times, we are seeing an auto insurance scam that is putting the public at risk.

The scam is fraudulent insurance I.D. cards and is currently predominant on the east coast. Insurance I.D. cards are being purchased by consumers in an effort to not pay for auto insurance and still get their vehicles registered for the road. These I.D. cards are also being purchased by honest, unsuspecting consumers who believe they are purchasing legitimate auto insurance.

Officials in New York estimate that New Yorkers have lost millions of dollars to fake insurance card scams. If you are involved in an auto accident that is not your fault and the at fault driver does not carry insurance, you are left holding an empty bag. Unless you carry uninsured motorist coverage on your policy, you are not going to collect for the damages to your vehicle. If an uninsured motorist hits a pedestrian, that leaves the pedestrian with the responsibility of paying his own medical bills, unless he has health insurance.

The swindlers are two groups of people. The first group of people are the ones who are seeking out fake I.D. cards to register their vehicles for the road and not have to pay for auto insurance. The second group of people are the con artist who are targeting undocumented immigrants as well as consumers who are not that well educated as to the process of buying insurance.

You can protect yourself;

1. Buy insurance from a licensed agent or broker. You can verify the agents license with the department of insurance for the state you reside in.

2. You can also call the licensed insurance company to verify that you have real insurance.

3. I also recommend that you carry uninsured and under insured motorist coverage on your policy. This will protect you from those without legitimate insurance and from those without enough insurance. Like the slogan from an old “American Express” commercial says. “Don’t leave home without it”.

An auto insurance policy is designed with the objective of covering the losses and assisting the policy holder or the insured to recover from any of the unexpected financial losses which may occur as a result of any property damages, injuries to the body and other liabilities. But what does an auto insurance policy cover?

This depends upon the coverage purchased by the insured and which is included in the main policy. There are a lot of different policies available with various choices of protection. This can be decided by discussing all the policies between the insured and the insurer.

Most of these policies usually include liability coverage that will cover the medical injuries or property damages which can result due to accidents caused by the insured or the policy holder. This can be extended only up to the purchased limit. Liability coverage is very important since the policy covers or protects the insured from the need to pay for the damages caused to other people although the policy will not cover the insured’s own losses.

The main advantage is that the insured need not pay from their own pocket. If in case, a driver who is uninsured was involved in an accident which has resulted in injuring a lot many people, causing damage to many vehicles in addition to some city property, he would need to pay for all the damages and the injuries caused out-of-pocket. This can vary from a small amount to a very large amount. The following is a good example.
$28,000 sum of bodily injuries to other people $8,000 for the damage of someone else’s vehicle $4,000 for the damage of city property like street light signal.

The above mentioned example will make the uninsured driver to pay $40,000 from his own savings. Even there are chances for some people to sue and place a lien against their personal assets like homes and vehicles. But when the driver is insured, the liability coverage policy will cover all the incurred damages, if they had purchased the necessary coverage limits.

In addition to this, there are another type of coverage especially designed to cover the insured’s personal damages and bodily injuries. There are many types in this alone. It may be only personal injuries or only the vehicle damages or both. Suppose a person desires to cover only his personal injuries, he may look into PIP (Personal Injury Protection) or the medical payments coverage. Suppose he wishes to protect his own vehicle from accidental damages or theft, he may want to look into the Comprehensive and Collision coverage. This covers all damages to vehicle if there is an accident or any other hazards like fire, falling objects, vandalism, etc. Or he may take both the coverage to protect himself as well as his vehicle.

Again, many other varieties of protection are being offered for purchase which will be considered on the basis of one’s budget and requirements. Each of this coverage may range in price depending upon the details of each driver, their limits and insured vehicles.
